Now there’s a blog title I never thought I’d write, but this is an ode to a doily. Yes, we all have them, passed down from our granny or an eccentric great aunt. Generally the doily brings to mind old ladies and mothballs, but recently they have been revived in the form of various upcycle projects doing the rounds. Firstly, the word “doily” is quite an odd one, and Wikipedia was kind enough to inform me of its origins:
“A doily (or doilie) is an ornamental mat, originally the name of a fabric made by Doiley, a 17th-century London draper. Doily earlier meant “genteel, affordable woolens”, evidently from the same source.”
Right, so here are some of my favourite genteel woolen projects, I hope they inspire you to get out your doilies! I will share one of my own doily projects in a future post.
